Https www messenger com create account. 'The Way It Is' is a song by American rock group Bruce Hornsby and the Range. It was released in September 1986 as the second single from their debut album The Way It Is. It topped the charts in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands in 1986,[1] and peaked inside the top twenty in such countries as Australia, Ireland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Written by Bruce Hornsby, it made explicit reference to the Civil Rights Movement. Musically, the song is characterized by two long piano solos. The song has been sampled by rapper E-40 for his song 'Things'll Never Change', by 2Pac for 'Changes', and rapper Polo G for 'Wishing for a Hero' in 2020.

Content[edit]

The opening verse recounts a story taking place at a line for welfare that illustrates a divide between the rich and poor. The chorus presents several lines insisting that social ills are 'just the way it is', and repeatedly suggests resigning oneself to them as a fact of life—however, the chorus ends with the author rebuking this attitude by insisting 'but don't you believe them.'

The second verse recounts past social issues from the voice of someone supporting racial segregation. The author responds in a narrative voice, insisting his view that if those who make laws took them into careful consideration they would be convinced that laws enforcing principles like racial segregation are morally wrong. The song reminds the listener that it was at one time argued that racial segregation was 'just the way it is', and suggests that legislation and what the author views as progress on current social issues should be pursued without regard to those who insist 'some things will never change.'

The third verse recounts the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a victory in the civil rights movement, but insists that more is needed. In particular, the verse highlights individual prejudice and employment discrimination as an enduring form of racism. The third chorus suggests that it only feels like 'some things will never change' when we wait for social problems to change themselves rather than taking steps ourselves to actively change them.

In Popular Culture[edit]

  • The music to Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is was used as the theme tune for BBC1's City Hospital, a medical documentary television series which ran from 1998 to 2007.
  • In the television show Community, Pierce Hawthorne (played by Chevy Chase) writes a theme song entitled 'Greendale's the Way it Goes' for the community college that is quickly recognized as a total rip-off of 'The Way It Is.' This was in the season one episode, 'Advanced Criminal Law.' While playing, characters Abed and Jeff begin to discuss if it's a Hornsby rip-off and if they can get sued, which they come to the conclusion that 'They got us'.

The Way It Is Piano Music

There isn't a second of Bruce Hornsby & the Range's The Way It Is that suggests it's a debut album. On the contrary, the record sounds like the culmination of a band's efforts over many years. The group has a distinct sound of its own, often led by Hornsby's bright piano chords and elastic tenor, with cohesive and evocative arrangements; there is new age music here, as well as jazz and country, and the mixture is presented naturally by musicians who seem to have been playing with each other for some time. Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Hornsby wrote seven of the nine songs with his brother John Hornsby, and they create their own world, a working-class environment of longing and loneliness set against the background of the Virginia Tidewater area. (The album cover displays a sepia-toned photograph of the band set over another photograph of the long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.) The lyrics are lightly poetic and restrained, for the most part. The exception is the title song (written by Bruce Hornsby alone), a brave if somewhat clumsily written attack on the heartless right-wing politics of the mid-'80s, as the U.S. When is catalina coming out. suffered through a second Reagan administration determined to roll back civil rights gains. The boldness of the statement and the lovely piano theme more than compensate for the awkward writing, however, making the song one of the album's most memorable. And that's saying a lot when the competition includes the engaging 'Mandolin Rain' and the appealingly romantic 'Every Little Kiss' (Hornsby's other sole writing credit). Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that the music is so accomplished. Hornsby was no teenage neophyte when he made it, having kicked around the music business and gotten into his thirties, and the band includes such veterans as David Mansfield, who may be remembered as a member of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder troupe and the Alpha Band, as well as being a film composer. Sometimes a debut album just happens to be the first music most people get to hear by a mature talent, and that's the case here on the debut album of the year. (Bruce Hornsby & the Range went on to win the 1986 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.)
